Signs of Depression

Just like anxiety, depression is common among adolescents. Here are a few signs of depression. Depression can start to take over your life if you are not able to work things out on your own. You may not want to go to school/work, hang out with friends & family or having little drive to do much at all. These changes can lead to a vicious cycle of depression. Counseling can help you work through your thoughts and feelings, allowing you to get back to your life.

Risk & Protective Factors

Risk & Protective Factors

There are several risk factors that can influence whether an adolescent may struggle with a mental health disorder. On the flip side, there are also protective factors that may lower the risk for issues during adolescents. Of course, everyone is different, and these factors do not determine you or your child’s mental health. Risk factors include maternal depression which in turn can create a disconnect between her and her children. It may also make the child feel out of place or even unwanted. Nutrient deficiencies, being in violent homes or being involved in deprivation can cause problems with brain development because of perceived threats. Issues related to family, peers or in school can make a child feel alone, misunderstood, or angry. Children that have these factors are subject to negative thoughts and feelings which can impact their mental health. There are also protective factors that may help safeguard a child from mental health issues. These include having healthy relationships with family, friends and school/community members. Those that have been taught life skills that will help them handle concerns that arise and contribute to their self-esteem. Having a supportive friend group can make adolescents feel heard and seen while giving them a sense of belonging. Lastly, having a strong connection to their mother allows them to feel loved and safe. The more factors that you have, either risk or protective, the more you will be influenced by them. Counseling can be beneficial when trying to navigate mental health issues. Our goal is to help you or your child get to a positive mindset so you can live a happy and fulfilling life.
